{"id":71410,"date":"2018-01-22T19:16:29","date_gmt":"2018-01-22T19:16:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/psaafrica.co.za\/mg\/?p=71410"},"modified":"2019-04-09T15:57:06","modified_gmt":"2019-04-09T13:57:06","slug":"beware-alcohol-abuse-festive-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/psaafrica.co.za\/mg\/beware-alcohol-abuse-festive-season\/","title":{"rendered":"Beware of alcohol abuse this festive season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The abuse of drugs and alcohol over the annual festive season can have a terribly destructive effect on families, communities, on our roads and in the workplace.\u00a0 \u201cThis is why it\u2019s essential to support any initiative that aims to curb abuse and save lives,\u201d said\u00a0<strong>alcohol abuse<\/strong>\u00a0testing expert Hank Lombard.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Alcohol abuse\u00a0is a leading cause of road deaths worldwide, hence the SA Department of Transport\u2019s proposed amendment to the National Road Traffic Amendment Act, 1996.\u00a0 The amendment would lower the maximum permissible Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) for drivers from the current 0.05g per 100ml to 0.02g per 100ml of blood.<\/p>\n<h4>Breathalysers need to be accurate to detect true levels of alcohol abuse<\/h4>\n<p>This could equate to less than a can of beer, one shot of whisky or 75ml of wine, depending on the person\u2019s physiology.\u00a0 \u201cWe supply alcohol testing instruments that are extremely accurate, picking up any level of alcohol in the user\u2019s system from zero percent upwards,\u201d said Lombard.<\/p>\n<p>The Automobile Association (AA) of SA supports the new drinking and driving limits, saying that their research shows that drivers are already significantly impaired at a BAC of 0.05.\u00a0 They believe that a limit of 0.02g allows some leeway for medications that contain alcohol.<\/p>\n<h4>Alcohol abuse testing protocols paramount during festive season<\/h4>\n<p>\u201cThe amendment is unlikely to have become law before the annual festive season break when the number of road accidents sky rockets along with the number of vehicles on our roads.
