Area monitoring is the use of gas detectors that merges elements from both portable and fixed gas detectors into one solution within a linked network. They are not considered personal protective equipment even though they are made to be transported from location to location. Instead, they are primarily designed to help safeguard groups of workers in a given industrial perimeter.

PSA’s Maintenance Division handles the calibration of MSA portable and fixed gas detection instruments. A calibration check, according to the ISEA, is a quantitative test utilizing a known traceable concentration of test gas to demonstrate that the sensor(s) and alarms respond to the gas within manufacturer’s acceptable limits.
To ensure the accuracy of all monitoring and detection equipment, calibration should be performed regularly. If the instrument reading differs significantly from the values of the known standard, the instrument should not be used until it has been adjusted or, if necessary, repaired.
