How to correctly fit the Advantage Half-Mask Respirator
Correctly fitting your respirator is crucial to ensure optimal protection from harmful airborne contaminants. The Advantage 200LS Half-Mask Respirator is designed for comfortable long-term use, but it only works effectively if worn properly. Follow these steps to ensure you get the best protection when using your respirator. The following guide is adapted from the detailed instructions in the PSA Africa Advantage 200LS Donning Poster.
Step 1: Inspect the Mask & Loosen Straps
Before donning the respirator, always inspect the facepiece, straps, and filters for damage or wear. Damage can compromise the fit and filtration, reducing the mask’s effectiveness. If any parts are defective, replace them before use.
Step 2: Pre-Position the Head Harness
Hold the facepiece in one hand and with the other, grasp the straps of the head harness. Pull the neck strap over your head and place it around your neck..
Step 3: Position the Mask on Your Face
Place the mask firmly against your face, covering your nose and mouth. Adjust the facepiece so that it sits comfortably on the bridge of your nose and creates a snug seal around your face. Pull the top portion of the facepiece on the bridge of your nose and swing the bottom of the facepiece inward.
Step 4: Pull the Head Harness Over Your Head
With the facepiece securely positioned, pull the cradle headband over your head until it straddles the crown of your head.
Step 5: Tighten the Straps
Start by tightening the upper straps on both sides. Next, adjust the lower straps to ensure the mask is evenly and firmly in place. Be careful not to over-tighten as this can cause discomfort over time. The key is to have a secure fit that prevents air from leaking in but allows for comfortable movement and breathing..
Step 6: Perform a Seal Check
Positive Pressure Test:
- Cover the exhalation valve and exhale gently. If the mask bulges slightly but no air escapes from the sides, the mask is sealed properly. If air leaks, readjust the straps and try again.
Negative Pressure Test:
- Cover the cartridge openings with your hands and inhale gently. The mask should collapse slightly, and no air should leak into the facepiece. If you feel air entering, adjust the mask and straps, and repeat the test until the mask is properly sealed.
Step 7: Wear and Adjust as Needed
Once you’ve achieved a proper seal, you’re ready to use the mask. Be sure to check the fit periodically throughout the day, especially after physical activity or movement, as the mask can shift. A proper fit ensures that you remain protected in environments with airborne hazards.
Step 8: Safe Removal
When you are done using the respirator, avoid touching the front of the mask. Remove it by loosening the bottom straps first and lifting the head harness off from the back of your head.
By following these steps, you can ensure that your Advantage Half-Mask Respirator provides the highest level of protection. Always perform the seal checks and regularly inspect your mask for wear and tear to stay safe in your work environment.
