Is Your Construction Site Fully Protected Against These Risks?

Falls from height, confined space hazards and atmospheric dangers cause preventable fatalities on South African construction sites every year. If any of these apply, it is time to act.

Unprotected Work at Height on Active Construction Sites

Scaffolding, roofing and steel fixing expose workers to fall risk on every active site. The OHS Act Construction Regulations require a fall protection plan for any work above 2 metres. Without a certified harness system and compliant anchorage, a single misstep becomes a fatality.

Confined Space Entry Without Gas Detection

Construction teams regularly enter excavations, stormwater pipes and underground chambers that accumulate CO, H2S and methane from surrounding services. Oxygen levels can drop without warning. Entry without a calibrated multigas detector puts every worker at lethal risk.

No Rescue Capability After a Fall or Confined Space Event

Suspension trauma can begin within minutes of a fall arrest event. The OHS Act requires a documented rescue plan and the equipment to execute it. Without a tripod retrieval system or trained standby attendant, an arrested fall or confined space emergency can still become fatal.

We are not just suppliers. We are construction safety specialists who understand fall risk, confined space entry and OHS Act Construction Regulations.

We supply compliant equipment, manage calibration, deliver on-site training and provide ongoing maintenance across Southern Africa.

How We Keep Your Construction Site Safe and Compliant

From fall protection planning and confined space specification through to ongoing compliance, here is how we work.

.

Assess, Specify & Select

We review your fall protection plan and confined space entry requirements under the OHS Act Construction Regulations. We specify certified harness systems, lifelines and gas detectors matched to your site anchorage options, task types and rescue obligations.

Supply & Commission On-Site

We supply certified fall protection and gas detection equipment, conduct harness fit checks, set up tripod systems and calibrate all gas detectors before deployment. Every worker starts a confined space entry or work at height with equipment correctly fitted and tested.

Maintain, Inspect & Certify

We schedule annual harness and fall arrest device inspections under SANS 50365, deliver routine bump testing and calibration of gas detectors, and issue service records that support your site compliance file and principal contractor audit requirements.

Common Questions About Construction Safety Equipment and Compliance

Selecting the right fall protection and gas detection equipment for construction is critical. Here are the most common questions from safety officers, site managers and principal contractors.

What fall protection does the OHS Act require on construction sites?

The OHS Act Construction Regulations require a fall protection plan for work at 2 metres or above. The plan must identify fall risks, specify controls and document equipment to be used. This may include a full body harness with energy-absorbing lanyard, a self-retracting personal fall limiter, or a horizontal lifeline. PSA Africa assists safety officers in specifying the correct system for each task type and anchorage condition.

When is a gas detector required for construction confined space entry?

Any excavation, chamber or enclosed structure meeting the confined space definition under the OHS Act requires atmospheric testing before entry. Construction sites accumulate methane from disturbed soil, CO from nearby generators, and H2S near sewer lines. Oxygen depletion also occurs in sealed excavations. A calibrated multigas detector measuring CO, H2S, LEL and oxygen must be used before and during entry

What does compliant confined space entry require on a building site?

Compliant entry requires a signed permit-to-work, pre-entry atmospheric test with a calibrated gas detector, a trained standby attendant outside the space, a tripod retrieval system for non-entry rescue, and documented emergency procedures. PSA Africa supplies complete confined space entry kits including the ALTAIR detector, tripod retrieval system and retrieval harness, and delivers on-site training for your site teams.

Do you service equipment purchased elsewhere?

We provide certified servicing and support for genuine MSA Safety equipment supplied through authorised distribution channels. All servicing is conducted in accordance with official MSA standards using approved parts and procedures.

Can PSA Africa inspect and certify our existing fall protection gear?

Yes. PSA Africa provides annual inspection and certification of harnesses, lanyards, self-retracting lifelines and horizontal lifeline systems in accordance with SANS 50365. After inspection, each item receives a service record supporting your site safety file and audit requirements. Equipment that fails inspection is tagged out of service with a written replacement recommendation.

Which SANS certifications apply to construction fall protection?

Equipment meets SANS 50361 for full body harnesses, SANS 50362 for connectors, SANS 50363 for energy-absorbing lanyards and SANS 50365 for periodic inspection. Horizontal lifeline systems comply with EN 795 Class C. All products are third-party certified. PSA Africa provides certification documentation for inclusion in your site safety file or client compliance submission on request

Does PSA Africa provide on-site fall protection training for site teams?

Yes. PSA Africa delivers on-site training covering harness donning and pre-use inspection, connection to anchor points and lifeline systems, device limits and removal from service, post-fall inspection requirements, and confined space entry including gas detector operation and permit-to-work procedures. Training is tailored to your equipment, fall protection plan and site hazard register.
