Is Your Oil & Gas Operation Fully Protected?

H2S, toxic gases, explosive atmospheres and confined space risks cause preventable fatalities in South African oil and gas operations every year. If any of these situations apply, it’s time to act.

H2S Exposure in Process and Maintenance Areas

H2S is present across refineries, sour gas operations and effluent systems. At concentrations above 100ppm it causes rapid incapacitation. Operations relying on fixed detection gaps have no safe window to respond.

Explosive Atmospheres in Unmonitored Hazardous Areas

ATEX and IECEx zone classification defines which equipment is safe to operate in your plant. Fixed detection gaps in Zone 1 or Zone 2 areas create blind spots where flammable gas concentrations can reach LEL undetected.

Turnaround and Contractor Workforce at Confined Space Risk

Planned shutdowns bring large contractor workforces into vessels and columns without site hazard familiarity. In addition to H2S and LEL risks, CO exposure from cutting and welding operations is a live hazard. Coordinating gas detection, SCBA allocation and permit-to-work compliance across that workforce is a critical operational risk.

Common Questions About Safety Equipment for Oil & Gas Operations

Selecting the right equipment for a classified hazardous area is a critical decision. We have answered the questions we hear most often from HSE managers and plant safety engineers.

Do we need fixed gas detection if our teams already carry portable detectors?

Fixed and portable detection serve different purposes. Fixed systems provide continuous, unattended monitoring in process areas and trigger automatic alarms and shutdowns when gas levels reach dangerous concentrations. Portable detectors protect individual workers during specific tasks. In a classified hazardous area, both are required under a compliant safety programme.

What gases does your fixed detection equipment monitor in a refinery environment?

Our fixed detection systems monitor hydrogen sulphide (H2S), combustible hydrocarbon gases to the lower explosive limit (LEL), carbon monoxide (CO), oxygen depletion and enrichment, and toxic process gases relevant to your specific operation. MSA equipment supports sensor configurations for the full range of gases encountered in refinery and petrochemical environments.

How do you support equipment readiness ahead of a planned turnaround or shutdown?

We offer pre-turnaround instrument audits, automated bump testing and calibration of your full detector fleet, and equipment planning for large contractor workforces. We can supply additional portable detectors on a short-term basis to cover peak headcounts, and we provide on-site technical support throughout the shutdown period.

Can you calibrate and service our existing equipment?

Yes. We offer servicing, calibration and maintenance for MSA and Lifeloc equipment. Our technicians are factory trained on the full MSA safety equipment range and Lifeloc breathalysers, ensuring your instruments are serviced to manufacturer standards and your compliance documentation remains current. We do not service or calibrate equipment from other brands.

What ATEX and IECEx certifications do your gas detectors carry?

MSA gas detection equipment carries IECEx and ATEX certifications for use in Zone 0, Zone 1 and Zone 2 classified hazardous areas. Specific certification details vary by product and sensor configuration. In addition, all portable and fixed gas detection equipment used in South Africa must be certified by an authorised local certification agency before it can be put into service. We can provide full certification documentation for any equipment we supply to support your area classification records and compliance requirements.

Do you provide on-site training integrated with our permit-to-work procedures?

Yes. We provide on-site operator training covering correct equipment use, bump testing procedures, pre-entry atmospheric testing, and alarm response. Training can be structured to align with your permit-to-work system and confined space entry procedures, and we issue attendance records for your compliance documentation.

What areas do you serve in South Africa and SADC countries?

We have qualified technicians based in Gauteng, Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, and we support operations across Botswana, Namibia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Zambia. Contact us to discuss support arrangements for your specific site locations across the Southern African region
