Is Your Maritime Operation at Risk? Common Hazards Offshore Operators Face Every Day
Invisible atmospheric threats, emergency preparedness gaps and compliance requirements cause preventable incidents across maritime operations every year. If any of these situations sound familiar, it is time to review your equipment and emergency readiness.
Sending Crew Into Enclosed Vessel Spaces Without Atmospheric Monitoring
Hydrogen sulphide, combustible vapours and oxygen-deficient atmospheres can build up inside ballast tanks and void spaces without visible warning. Atmospheric conditions change rapidly during maintenance and inspection — entry without monitoring places crews at immediate risk.
Working at Height on Offshore Structures Without Compliant Fall Systems
Helidecks, pipe racks and crane structures expose crews to continuous fall hazards during maintenance and inspection. Vessel movement, contaminated surfaces and salt exposure mean standard industrial fall systems are not designed for offshore marine conditions.
Responding to Onboard Emergencies Without the Right Respiratory Protection
Engine room fires and fuel vapour incidents can overwhelm enclosed marine environments faster than crews can respond. Without correctly specified respiratory protection and emergency escape systems, crews may lose critical evacuation time when it matters most.
Gaps in Safety Documentation, Equipment Records or Verified Crew Readiness
SOLAS and the ISM Code require documented safety procedures, calibrated equipment records and verified crew readiness. Port State Control inspections can detain a vessel for unresolved deficiencies and undetected crew impairment compounds every other risk on board.

Common Questions About Offshore Safety Systems & Maritime Compliance
Selecting the correct offshore fall protection, respiratory and atmospheric monitoring systems is critical for maritime operational safety. Here are the most common questions from offshore operators, ports and marine engineering teams.
Ballast tanks, cargo holds and enclosed offshore compartments can contain oxygen-deficient atmospheres, combustible vapours and toxic gases without visible warning signs. Continuous atmospheric monitoring helps verify safe entry conditions before and during confined space operations, and provides a documented record of atmospheric conditions to support compliance with OHS Act and SOLAS requirements.
CO₂ monitoring addresses two distinct risks in the maritime sector. First, enclosed accommodation areas, control rooms and vessel environments with poor ventilation can accumulate elevated CO₂ levels that affect crew concentration, decision-making and wellbeing over time. Second, machinery spaces protected by fixed CO₂ flooding systems present a risk of accidental discharge during maintenance operations, creating a life-threatening atmosphere for anyone in the space. IMO resolution MSC.581(110), which came into force in December 2025, introduces CO₂ monitoring requirements for certain enclosed machinery spaces as a direct response to this risk
Marine operations frequently require half-mask respirators, full-face respiratory protection, emergency escape respirators and SCBA systems depending on atmospheric hazards and confined space risks.
SCBA systems are commonly required during confined space rescue, hazardous atmospheric exposure, emergency response operations and environments where oxygen levels are unsafe for standard respiratory protection.
Offshore systems must operate reliably in corrosive, high-humidity and continuously changing environments exposed to salt spray, vessel movement and harsh weather conditions.
Entering an enclosed space to perform rescue without retrieval systems exposes additional personnel to the same hazardous atmosphere. Non-entry rescue systems allow workers to be recovered rapidly without placing additional crews at risk. The majority of multiple-casualty confined space incidents result from attempted rescues without retrieval capability in place
Under SOLAS and the International Safety Management Code, vessel operators are required to maintain documented safety management systems, conduct risk assessments for hazardous tasks including confined space entry, and ensure all safety equipment is maintained and calibrated to manufacturer standards. Port State Control officers inspect these records during port calls. Vessels found with inadequate safety management documentation, uncalibrated equipment or insufficient emergency preparedness can be detained until deficiencies are resolved. PSA Africa provides calibration certificates, service records and technical documentation to support ISM Code compliance.
