Safety Equipment for South Africa's Utilities & Government Teams

Critical Services Cannot Stop. Are Your Teams Properly Protected?

Ageing infrastructure, confined spaces and emergency call-outs put your teams at risk daily. From gas detection and confined-space rescue equipment to fall protection, respiratory and hearing protection, intrinsically safe lighting and PPE, we equip utilities, municipalities, water boards, public entities and government departments across South Africa and SADC.

Complete Safety Solutions for Utility & Government Operations

Your personnel face atmospheric hazards, confined spaces, work-at-height risks, noise exposure and emergency conditions every day, keeping essential public infrastructure running. We supply, commission, service and maintain the equipment that protects them.

Gas Detection & Confined Space Safety

  • Portable multigas detection for sewers, chambers, tanks and pump stations
  • Detection of H2S, chlorine, CO, combustible gases and oxygen deficiency
  • Pre-entry atmospheric testing and continuous personal monitoring
  • Tripod, winch and retrieval systems for non-entry rescue
  • Calibration, bump testing and traceable service records

Worker Protection & Maintenance Safety

  • Fall protection for towers, reservoirs, rooftops and elevated structures
  • SCBA and reusable respiratory protection for hazardous atmospheres
  • Optrel powered respiratory protection for welding, grinding and maintenance tasks
  • Sordin hearing protection for high-noise plant, workshops and field operations
  • Head, eye, face and hand protection for technical personnel

Emergency Readiness & Operational Support

  • Peli intrinsically safe torches and lanterns for hazardous locations
  • Peli Remote Area Lighting Systems for outages and emergency repairs
  • Alcohol testing for safety-critical teams, fleets and contractor access
  • On-site training, inspection, maintenance and compliance support
  • Risk assessments and application-specific safety solution recommendations

Is Your Utility or Government Operation Fully Protected?

Essential-service teams often work under pressure to restore supply quickly. If any of these conditions apply to your operation, it’s time to act.

Confined Space Entry Without Reliable Atmospheric Testing

Sewer manholes, wet wells, valve chambers, reservoirs, tanks and pump stations can contain hydrogen sulphide, chlorine, methane, carbon monoxide or oxygen-deficient atmospheres. These hazards may be invisible and can change rapidly. General Safety Regulation 5 of the OHS Act requires a calibrated multigas detector, trained personnel and an effective rescue system before entry. Without them, both workers and rescuers face serious risk.

Emergency Repairs on Ageing or Failing Infrastructure

South Africa's water and municipal infrastructure is ageing, and teams rehabilitating failing treatment works, wastewater systems and distribution networks are often called out at night, in severe weather, near live services or in poorly ventilated areas. A controlled response depends on safe lighting, gas detection, respiratory protection, communication and task-specific PPE.

Work at Height, Noise and Maintenance Hazards

Personnel on substations, transmission structures, water towers, rooftops and elevated platforms face fall and noise hazards. Those working on generators and mechanical plant add arc flash, welding fume and impact risk. A harness or earmuff alone is not a complete system. The right equipment is matched to the task and area classification requirements, and backed by inspection, training and rescue procedures.

25+ Years Supporting Utilities and Government Operations Across South Africa

Full lifecycle safety support across South Africa and SADC.

Electricity, water, sanitation and public works teams face confined spaces, hazardous atmospheres, work-at-height risks and emergency conditions every day. We go beyond equipment supply: commissioning gas-detection systems, managing calibration programmes and delivering on-site training throughout Southern Africa.

How We Keep Your Utility or Government Operation Safe and Compliant

From assessment to ongoing compliance, we keep your teams protected.

Assess, Specify
& Select

We start by reviewing your operating environment, task risk assessment, confined-space inventory, atmospheric hazards, area classification and work-at-height requirements. From there, we specify equipment for the identified hazards, exposure conditions, certification needs and rescue plan.

Supply, Commission &
Train

We supply certified equipment, commission detection systems and calibrate portable gas monitors, then confirm compatibility between harnesses, connectors, anchor systems and retrieval equipment. Our specialists train your personnel in equipment operation, atmospheric testing and emergency procedures.

Maintain, Inspect &
Document

We schedule gas-detector bump testing and calibration, and conduct annual SCBA and fall-protection inspection. We also maintain equipment records, so service reports and calibration certificates support internal systems, procurement requirements and audits under GSR Regulation 5.

Common Questions About Utility and Government Safety Equipment

Choosing the right gas detection, confined space and PPE solution is critical. Here are the most common questions we receive from safety officers and asset managers.

We already have safety equipment. Why do we need a specialist supplier?

Many utilities and municipalities already own gas detectors, harnesses and respiratory protection. Often it’s uncalibrated, out of certification, or incompatible with current confined-space and area classification requirements. PSA Africa reviews your existing inventory, identifies compliance gaps and supplies, services or replaces equipment so your teams remain protected and audit-ready without unnecessary spend.

Why is gas detection essential for water, sewer and pump station entry?

Hydrogen sulphide, chlorine, methane, carbon monoxide and oxygen-deficient atmospheres can develop inside pump stations, reservoirs, chambers, sewer networks and confined spaces. A calibrated multigas detector lets workers test the atmosphere before entry and monitor it continuously while work is carried out. This is required under General Safety Regulation 5 of the OHS Act.

How should we equip teams for emergency repairs and after-hours call-outs?

Emergency repairs often happen at night, during severe weather or following infrastructure failures. Portable lighting, gas detection, respiratory protection, fall protection and task-specific PPE should be pre-packed and ready for immediate deployment. Trained personnel then need to safely assess confined-space and live-service risks under pressure.

Can you service and calibrate equipment we purchased elsewhere?

Yes. We service, bump test and calibrate genuine MSA gas detection, respiratory protection and fall-protection equipment supplied through authorised distribution channels. We also assess existing fleets to identify coverage gaps and recommend upgrades where equipment no longer meets current hazard or compliance requirements.

What legislation applies to utilities and government organisations in South Africa?

Utility and government organisations must comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993, including General Safety Regulation 5 governing confined-space entry. Further regulations apply to electrical safety, hazardous chemical agents and construction work, and additional requirements may apply depending on the specific operation.

Do you provide training for municipal and utility teams?

Yes. On-site training covers gas detector operation and bump testing, confined-space entry procedures, SCBA donning and use, fall-protection inspection and rescue system operation. It’s tailored to the specific hazards your teams encounter, from sewer entry to substation work at height.

What areas do you support in South Africa and SADC?

Wherever your operation is based, you’re covered: across South Africa, including Gauteng, Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, and across selected SADC countries such as Botswana, Namibia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Zambia. We provide supply, installation, calibration and rapid servicing throughout.
